Spanish golf holidays came into being because of the following distinct factors:
Change in Aviation Law – Amendments to the Convention on International Civil Aviation in 1954 allowed packaging holiday components together with cheap charter flights. This brought about the birth of the cheap package holiday and allowed the masses, for the first time, to take their holiday abroad.
The birth of the winter holiday – In the summer the hotels were bursting at the seams and in the winter Spain was deserted, until the really cheap winter package holiday was born. This in turn was the starting point of the winter Spanish golf holidays which proved a success and many other countries followed this lead.
Cheap Land – In the Costa del Sol land unsuitable for hotels or agriculture was both plentiful and cheap and ideal to build great undulating golf courses.
Climate – The warm sunny climate in Spain in the winter was in complete contrast to the UK climate and perfect for winter golf.
Holiday resort infrastructure – Everything was available to supplement the golf, including bars, night clubs and restaurants.
Weather – Spain has so much to offer. The first (and most important thing) is the weather, which is great all year round, with an excess of 300 days of sunshine. The second, a huge choice of courses including parkland, links, courses with sea views, mountain views, flat courses, hilly courses, championship courses and spectacular mountain courses that meander through the foothills.
Cultural Diversity – There are also a great deal of choice for the various regions and towns which reflect the differing cultures and historical roots.
All of the above factors conspired to ensure the growth and popularity of golf holidays in Spain.
Although Costa del Sol golf was the fore-runner of the Spanish golf holiday, most coastal areas in Spain and its islands had been targeted by the cheap package tour operators during the summer months and these naturally evolved into Spanish golf destinations and many are still evolving with more and more golf courses being built.
